Just the start of "Sonny's Blues"....

In the short story “Sonny Blue’s” they described how big a part one person call take in someone’s life. In this story Sonny had a rough life growing up. He wasn’t privileged at all living in Harlem. In fact it really had a negative affect on his life. This may have been the cause of his personality. Sonny never really thought about who he was hurting with his actions when he would do things. He hurt many people through out his entire life, one person being his brother. His older brother used to try so hard to help him but Sonny would not allow this to happen. He would simply just push them away every time they tried to help.
Sonny’s music is his life support in a way. It is the one thing he trusts and the thing that truly gets him through the day. Sonny seems like he becomes a totally different person when he plays his piano. He goes into a sort of trace almost. The piano was his one escape from the world around him no matter how bad it seemed to get.
Sonny’s father also had a large impact on his life. He taught Sonny to be the way he was, to be cautious. He taught him that the world around him was not safe, in fact it was a very dangerous place. His father may have also influenced Sonny’s reaction to flee every time he got scared instead of staying and trying to deal with his problems. Every time Sonny got scared he would run away just like his father did when he left Harlem.
He used many things in his life to run from the problems that were brought upon him in his life. Most of his escapes seemed innocent at first but his escapes started to get worse and worse as time went by. They started out being things as simple as escaping through his music, and then it turned into escaping by joining the navy. Things to follow were things like his addiction to drugs which caused him to be sent to jail.

Heather,
You make some interesting points in your response about how the characters in this story change based on their relationships.

Should you decide to revise this into a larger project, you might consider how quoting specific passages from the text might support your argument. For example, how did Sonny resist his brother's help? What does that resistance say about his personality? How does Sonny act, look like, etc. when he is playing music?
